With PDAs, NLEX toll tellers process payments in 8 seconds

During peak hours at the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), motorists may see ambulant toll tellers speeding up payment transactions in eight seconds flat.
How? The Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC) has equipped ambulant toll tellers with personal digital assistants (PDAs) – bringing new speed in processing payments by motorists and issuing receipts to eight seconds. In the past, ambulant toll tellers process payments manually in 30 seconds.
MNTC President Rodrigo E. Franco emphasized that, “the portable computerized system has been introduced as a standby payment option at NLEX due to the need for speed in dealing with long lines at peak hours or during holidays.”
“We automated our ambulant toll teller transactions to minimize queuing at the toll plazas during peak hours, aside from assuring our motorists to continue experiencing smooth and speedy toll transactions at the NLEX,” Franco added. MNTC is the builder and concessionaire of the 94- kilometer NLEX.
Franco added that 20 units of the portable toll collection device are already available and roving at NLEX toll plazas.
The portable device will address the inconveniences involved in processing manual receipts, and enhancing efficiency and accuracy in dealing with such transactions.
The system works by touching the screen or by using a stylus. The PDA can read transit tickets by simply swiping such ticket through the PDA. It also prints BIR-approved lane receipts.
